Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. – Mother Teresa
The present moment is all you are promised and certain about. Life is a continuous succession of the present moment. Don’t postpone happiness for a time that might never come
We spend most of our lives building up for a later moment when we’ll be happy. Most of us spend a great deal worrying about the future, regretting the past, which makes us miss the opportunity to enjoy the here and now.
This is how to appreciate the moment:
1. BE PRESENT
The real beauty of life is in each present moment. Let your mind be focused totally on what you are doing. Savor the dinner you are having with your family. Be fully focused on your work and not think about what you will be doing during the weekend. Appreciate being in the moment.
2. EXPRESS DAILY GRATITUDE
Never let the things you want make you forget about the things you have. No matter how bad we think our problems are, you can almost be certain there is someone out there having it worse than we are. You missed breakfast, there is someone who hasn’t eaten for days.
Write down at the end of each day of what you are grateful for. It could be a list of two to four things. We need to have an attitude of gratitude and be grateful for everything in our lives.
3. CULTIVATE OPTIMISM
Stay positive. Stay committed. Choose to be the optimist. Choose to be the person who sees the opportunities in every difficulty.
4. AVOID SOCIAL COMPARISON
Most of our insecurities come from comparing our lives with other people’s highlight reef.
5. STOP OVERTHINKING
Thinking too much only complicates your life. It creates a problem that wasn’t even there to begin with.
We have preconceived notions about what need to happen in our lives for us to be happy. Maybe we need to get that dream job. Or we need to own a luxurious car of our dreams. Or maybe we need to be have the perfect body in order to be happy. Yes, these things make us happy. Or do they?
When we set goals and achieve them, we replace them with new goals. It’s in our nature as humans. This is how we have thrived. So you may find that you are not totally happy after you have achieved that big goal. You now have a bigger goal, that you now have to achieve to truly be happy. There is a good chance that you will spend the rest of your life chasing dreams that will one day make you truly happy.
Stay positive. Stay Committed.
